The wind is howling, the boat bobbing. This will be an interesting day. I jump out of the boat onto the pier in search of toilettes. Oh, there is a bathroom on the boat, but I don\u2019t want to disturb others. The wind is blowing my salty craggy hair in all directions. It is cloudy. I turn my head toward the sea, foam forms on the crests of small waves. A problem for another hour. The hour comes, as it always does. We silently munch on fresh baguettes laden with butter and jam. The sea is not so inviting, but the show must go on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alain, our captain, is on the phone getting the latest weather conditions. He gets the thumbs up and triumphantly announces that we will sail across the channel to Porquerolles. The boys are elated, they break out their sailing suits. I go down into the cabin to layer up with all the non-technical gear that I have. Just yesterday it was sweltering hot. We untie the lines and push off. It lives on the wind, it needs it to survive. The boat glides effortlessly and merrily across the channel at the speed of 8-9 knots and this only with half sails. We get splashed from time to time and this is just so much fun. The weight of the sails tilts the boat and we adjust our weight on the other side. This isn\u2019t scary or dangerous. The boat is a wind machine. We come across two dingy fishing boats and are reminded how ridiculous we are in our fancy Jeanneau yacht. An hour later we arrive to the mouth of Portquerolle\u2019s port. Portquerolles is an island, a nature reserve, with beautiful beaches, hiking &amp; cycling trails. It can easily be accessed from Hyere with a 20 minute ferry with hordes of other tourists. But we decide to do it in style and muscle our way into the bay. We can hardly pack up the sails before a small red motor boat with an agent from the capitaniere comes our way. Harshly, we are banished and turned away. No place today. There is a big sailing race and 20 boats are expected this afternoon. The wind is gone, the sun is out, the water shimmers. I could be in Thailand, if it wasn\u2019t for all the French around me. Alice and Gabriela put on their bikins. I know better. It is only June, the water is no where near my temperature comfort level. But the girls and their boyfriends (or something!) came down all the way from Paris, and Parisians will have their swim kicking and screaming. I make myself useful and start to prepare lunch. Lazy as we are, we settle on ham and cheese sandwiches and a few beers. Plain yogurt with apricot jam for desert. Delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An hour later, we had enough, the wind is turning. I am entrusted with the all important task of hoisting up the anchor. This very technical maneuver consists of pressing a button on a remote control. Life is easy on a Jeanneau sailboat. We arrive at the small port where nobody welcomes us or banishes us, but everyone watches from their cockpits as they finish up their 3 hour lunch. One might say the French buy sailboats to have a floating lunch venue, and just watch the world.\u00a0 But here we are main attraction, we need to park our boat in the tightest spot without upsetting any nearby boat owners. An impossible task really, it is so tight, no room for error. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alain takes the helm and incredibly squeezes the boat into the spot without blinking. The entire port applauds his achievement, except the sullen French boat next to us, who is permanently cynical and jaded. Other neighbors, perhaps a bit inebriated by now, offer us cold beers and the rest of their wine. So we head off to a hiking trail that leads to a secluded beach. I lead everyone as I\u2019ve walked these trails before, and the Parisians, well, didn\u2019t. We stop to take photos, continue hiking the shaded trails while discussing the meaning of life and all that jazz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beach, the Parisians again at all costs decide to swim. I munch on a cookie. Mostly everyone by now wants to go back to start the appero (French cocktail hour) ceremony, but I am eager to walk. Erwin decides to join me. Gabriella reminds Alain that the sun is almost setting and he promised her she can climb to the top of the mast. What\u2019s true is true, and Alain prepares the ropes. He creates a rope chair harness and hoists Gabriella to the top. And the view?
