The sun is as hot as ever, there is no wind and thus raising sails is useless. We turn on the engine and sail off. The kids are so happy to disconnect from the land and live on the sea. Half an hour later we already reach the edge of the national park and are awe struck by the huge cliffs and pillars of sheer rock protruding from the sea. The skipper encourages us to take the bar and try our hand at navigation. The kids fight over who gets to go first\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"[YouDrone] Beautiful Cassis - Calanques de Port Miou, En Vau &amp; Port Pin, Cap Canaille... \ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddf7  l4KI\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rICQOx01mjE?start=16&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We are hungry and hot and declare an obligatory swim and lunch stop at the first creek. We drop anchor amidst a few other boats and jump into the turquoise blue waters. The water temperature is perfect and we swim around exploring the creek. We observe teenagers diving off cliffs and I tell my kids \u201cdon\u2019t ever do that\u201d. The kids lost interest in navigation and found a new game sitting at the stern and getting their feet wet as the boat raises and falls with each wave. I join them and yes, this is fun even at my age. Finally we arrive at the most famous creek in the park <strong>Calanque en Vau<\/strong>. Words fail to describe this deep fjord, with towering limestone walls on either side. At the end, a secluded white sandy beach. And the waters? Turquoise and clear clear. Today is very busy as it is the last weekend in August. The beach is full of visitors and we can hardly find a place to moor. Annoying tourist ferries from Cassis come in an out to allow their clients to take photos, but no more. The sun is setting, day trippers leave and only a handful of yachts remain to pass the night. This is the most beautiful \u201ccamping spot for boats\u201d. We have dinner and wine on the deck and watch as the walls around us turn pink and orange. There is no good reception here, rendering my phone obsolete. This time the name of the game is cave exploration. We jump into the water and swim to a nearby cave. We duck as we enter the cave, a glorious underground cathedral of nature. The camber opens up and it is huge. The light from the entrance renders the waters light blue and we are mesmerized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By late afternoon we arrive at our mooring spot for the night in <strong>Calanque de Sormiou<\/strong>. We spend most of the afternoon in the water swimming, paddling the dingy and just \u201cfloating in Provence\u201d. The weather forecast predicts that the wind will pick up significantly in the afternoon. I prefer to make our way back in gentle waters. We set sail, the wind is gentle and we raise the sails cruising slowly at 3-5 knots. We enjoy the silence of the motor. Suddenly from far we see a pod of dolphins swimming and jumping out of the waters. The captain changes directions and we begin to follow the dolphins. The dolphins sense us and come closer to play with our boat. The kids are stunned and could not be happier to see dolphins in nature and not in a \u2018marine park\u2019. It is an experience they still talk about with enthusiasm and cherish this memory. It was their first encounter with dolphins in nature. We follow the dolphins for a good hour and then wave them goodbye as they swim in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have lunch at a creek next to La Ciotat. The bathers and cliff jumpers are all gone, put off by the impending wind. Last swim and we bid farewell to the Calanques until next season. By now the wind has picked up so we reduce sails and make our final leg back to the port.
