Already a great start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlight of this mountain range is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercantour-parcnational.fr\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parc Nationale du Mercantour<\/a><\/strong>. The road there follows spectacular scenery, and worth taking time and planning a picnic stop on the way along. The area of Mercantour National Park is 68,500 acres. Its geographical location near the Cote d&#8217;Azur, brings Mediterranean touches to these mountains. This is where the wolf naturally returned to France in 1992 when it crossed the park from Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except in winter, four mountain passes allow passage north of the Mercantour \/ Argentera mountain range. A 62 km long snowy barrier is visible from the shoreline in winter, threatening to cut off Italy from us. Many churches are decorated with murals and an altar adorned by primitive Nicoise painters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A wonderous valley<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Valley of Wonders (Vall\u00e9e des Merveilles)<\/strong> is a valley in Mercantour where more than 40,500 petroglyphs (rock engravings) have been found, dating to the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Ages. Access to the valley only on foot: either on one exhausting day of 8-10 hours ascent and descent and back to the parking lot \/ starting point. Or split up for two days and spend the night in the Marveilles Cabin on the shores of the lake.
