This tour is set in the heart of Avignon, the old city. We will tell the history of the little known city that prospered following the relocation of the papal seat. Houses, squares, statues, streets and alleys and the old synagogue in the Jewish Quarter provide the backdrop. Following, we continue to Avignon’s famous food market. From there we reach the Papal Palace and discover inside its mammoth walls, the lives of Avignon papacy in exile.
We will end at Saint-Bénézet Bridge. Finally, let us explore the impressive engineering achievement from the 12th century that made it possible to cross the Rhone River between Lyon and the Mediterranean Sea. We will now understand how it was built, why it did not last, and left us with only 4 remaining arches. A fascinating and important tour in every measure.
